Before The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Taking into account your expectations, the bony structure and the soft tissues of your nose, She makes a custom made plan for you. In most of the cases the expected result could be shown on the computer screen. Do not hesitate to ask all your questions during the consultation! The surgeon will also check for certain medical conditions that could limit the extension of the nose plastic surgery (such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems), because your safety is very important for us.

Nose reshaping could be combined with other facial procedures to restore the natural harmony between the different facial subunits. The most commonly performed additional treatments are chin implants. Always ask your surgeon about the possible combination of the procedures you are considering.

You also visit the anesthesiologist, who would give information about the sedation during the procedure and the pain management after the surgery.

During The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Most nose plastic surgeries are performed under general anesthesia, but sometimes when the bony structure is left untouched, local anesthesia with sedation can be used.

In most of the cases the goals of the nose plastic surgery could be achieved by the so called closed approach, no visible scars on the outer surface of the nose, every scar in concealed inside the nose. In some cases of tip refinement a small incision would be necessary between the nostrils. In case of correcting the too wide nostrils an additional scar on the side could be possible. Both these scars fade with time.

In general, our surgeon removes the unwanted bone and cartilage and repositions the remaining tissue to achieve the desired result. The wounds are closed with stitches, most of them absorbable, so they disappear spontaneously. In case of an open approach the skin sutures should be removed. At the end of the operation a plastic splint and nasal packs will fix the result and prevent the swelling and bleeding.

After The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Having headache and pain after nose plastic surgery is normal, although it can be lessened with the pain medication prescribed by our rhinoplasty surgeon or the attending anesthesist. Stay with the head slightly elevated to decrease the chance of bleeding. In the beginning, your face may look swollen, you may feel numbness. Your facial movements may be slightly stiff and speaking could be difficult due to the local anaesthetics and the nasal packs. As by the dentist, this improves in the first hours after the nose surgery. Eating would feel strange as you do not smell the meals. The nasal packs are removed on the 2nd-3rd postoperative day. The splint remains till the end of the first week – if outer stitches have been used, they are removed, too. After the removal of the sutures a special camouflage make-up can mask most bruising that remains.

Two to three days – swelling and bruising around your eyes will peak around now. Nasal packing will be removed

Ten days to two weeks – return to work. All dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed by now You are asked not to blow your nose for a week while the tissues heal.

Two weeks – most of the swelling should have subsided, but any activity that raises blood pressure should be avoided for another week

Three to six weeks – more strenuous activities can be resumed

Eight weeks – avoid hitting nose or sunburn

One year or more – your nose will have settled into its final appearance.

Duration of results: Permanent

• Temporary swelling, bruising around eyes, nose and headaches
• Some bleeding and stiffness.
• Post-operative bleeding that normally doesn’t require surgery.
• Unexpected aesthetic result requiring additional surgery.

You can wear contact lenses as soon as you feel like it, but glasses are another story. Once the splint is off, they’ll have to be taped to your forehead or propped on your nasal splint to keep pressure off of the healing bones and avoid movement of the bones.  With very light glasses, this may not be necessary for long.
